Methods of Alignment

Andreas van Dühren

It is both tempting and dangerous to deliberate categorically on drawing. Associations with the constructive and the spontaneous lead to apparently contradictory approaches. In this case the title seems to deliberately contradict appearances: strictness, consistency, adjustment, rectification on the one hand, the unfathomable and elusive, not initially subject to discourse, on the other …

All the same, there is an obvious need to leave as little as possible to the approximation and vagueness; they may be untapped inner worlds, but the individual emerges in sharp contours and the accentuation of the arrangement indicates the ambition of an inventor, only that this – author, director, demiurge? – is after an order characterised by fragmentation, falling apart, machinating interferences and not by reassuring coherence. Possible obverses – threatening, redeeming? – are indifferently conjoined to the familiar, and the vulnerable is permitted to be impatient with the masquerade. We follow an analysis whose results continually require a different examination principle. Every moment of truth contradicts the undemanding watchword; such is life.
